The device to measure blood pressure is called Sphysiognomymeter or sphygmometer. Stethoscope is also required in the process. The spygmometer consists of Puff or say inflatable cuff, bulb and a measuring unit. It is necessary to use correct size cuff in order to avoid wrong readings.
1) The cuff is placed smoothly and comfortably around an upper arm. Vertically height should be same as that of the heart and arm should be supported. See pic below
3) Start filling air in the cuff by pressing the air bulb till mercury level reaches to 180 mm. Note that patient would feel uneasiness during this step as flow of blood stops due to tightness of the cuff
4) Now slowly releases the pressure in the cuff while listening with stethoscope. This will result in the fall of mercury level.
5) Carefully listen the voice from stethoscope and note down the first sound heard during mercury fall. This point is called systolic blood pressure. This is the point when blood flow starts again in the artery.
6) Keep on listening the sound of blood flow and have an eye on the mercury level. Now note down the point at which sound of blood flow in arteries can no longer be heard. This point is called diastolic blood pressure. This is the point when arteries are fully opened and blood is flowing normally.
So, Now you are ready to check blood pressure of any person using Sphygmometer and Stethoscope.
Hope it works for you. Thanks
